surf fishing report

The first Saturday of March present with overcast skies full of gorgeous cloud formations. A light wind out of the east, and clear emerald green water gently rolling in. I arrived at the beach at 6:20am with the only marks on the smooth sand of the outgoing tide were that a a lone set of fresh bobcat tracks who must have visited the area shortly before I arrived. By 6:30 it was light enough to set up and start fishing. Before I had all my rods set, The pole with a new long-cast Penn reel that I had won during the Indian Riverkeeper surf tournament recently, was pulling hard. I anticipated that out as far I was throwing I may have had a big bonnet head shark, To my surprise a hefty Pompano was the 1st fish of the day. later the fish would tip the scales at 3pounds, 6 oz. The sun made it’s appearance off and on and the bite was slow and steady. Several large whiting were landed with 4 on the day over 1.5 pounds. Additional average size whiting were caught along with a couple more keeper pompano and at least 6 just slightly undersized pompano were released. To my surprise, as my morning was wrapping up, I was landing what I thought was going to be another whiting that turned out to be a 15″ weakfish that took a sandflea as bait. All of the fish I caught were on sandfleas at a distance out as far as I could throw
