Mosquito Lagoon Black Drum

Rober enjoyed sight-fishing for Mosquito Lagoon black drum on a recent trip with Capt. Mark Wright!

We made it through another hot week here in the south Mosquito Lagoon, with water temperatures dropping slightly due to the recent rainfall.

I noticed a rise in water levels too, also partly due to lots of rain and mostly due to strong southerly winds. The rise was substantial for this location. I’m guessing roughly four inches of “extra” water depth. It allowed me access to some backwater areas I haven’t been in quite a while.

Sadly (in my opinion), the flood was short lived and water levels dropped quickly over the past few days.

Thursday’s trip with Roy resulted in several redfish caught on #zmanfishingproducts Diezel Minnowz. These four inch mullet/minnow imitations are my go-to lure much of the year and we tossed them through schools of mullet leaving the back-waters as quickly as they could. Dropping water can have that effect on fish, even the little critters.

Friday, Tony and his Skitterwalk joined me for an early morning excursion. I found the water levels still dropping and we barely made it through a favorite slough. Tony did manage a couple of slot trout and a few on and off fish of unknown species.

Saturday, Rober & Lisa had a ball chasing school after school of black drum in the Mosquito Lagoon. Actually, I chased them while Rober casted at them and Lisa sat still looking cute in her boating attire! Lisa readily admits to not caring about the fishing aspect of this day. She was much more interested in watching the fish, dolphin, osprey and manatee.

The good news is Rober caught and released two over-slot drum using Diezel Minnowz and had several others on and off. The “fish that got away” were likely snagged and not fair-hooked.
