redfish

March winds bring April showers has been a saying for many years, and this March has definitely been living up to that reputation. With all the wind we have been experiencing lately there has still been a good bite tossing artificial baits around large mullet pods.

The pattern this week has been a little tricky. Wind blown shorelines with dirty water and large mullet have been holding good numbers of redfish. Sight fishing has pretty much been out of the question, but drift fishing and making long casts with artificial baits such as mirrolure lil johns, and gulp shrimp are two great choices, anything flashy or stinky in the churned up water has been producing nice fish. Anglers that prefer bait fishing can get some great fish anchoring or power pole down as I like with the wind at your back and making long casts with small chunks of mullet.

If you’re fishing chunks, the easiest thing to do is use a circle hook and let the fish do the work, this prevents gut hooks and a safe release. I highly suggest catch and release and most fish have been between 30-40 inches anyway, as we get more into spring we should see more and more larger redfish roaming the flats.
