stick marsh

Friday was the only day that I was on the water. We headed for the Stick Marsh in hopes of an early morning topwater bite but were shot down as soon as we pulled into the parking lot. We were met with SW winds around 10 mph which made most of the lake on the verge of whitecaps at 5:30 in the morning. If you have never fished on the Stick Marsh, wind is your enemy at 10+ mph. Due to it’s wide open waters there is no vegetation to block its wrath. So our first two spots we were hoping to fish were blown out with the wave action.

We moved to the Stick Marsh side of the impoundment which is where we have had great success with schooling bass and we were not disappointed to say the least. We boated close to thirty bass in 4 hours time throwing suspending jerk baits and lipless crankbaits. The water still had enough chop on it that a topwater plug just didn’t have any success in working it properly.

All in all it was a great morning. Soon the schooling activity will start to dwindle away and the bass will move towards deeper waters, especially with the water temperatures getting closer to 90 degrees.
