big black drum

This week the Space Coast has definitely been a little on the chilly side! With the cooler temps and windy weather, I’ve spent most my time in the lagoon and Indian River. Most fish have pulled off shallow water flats and are schooling up in deeper mangrove pockets and shorelines with deeper holes. Areas that have that mucky, soft bottom contours definitely have been the ticket. Black drum, redfish, trout and sheepshead have been the main species I’ve been catching.

With the cooler temperatures, I have found the artificial bite has really slowed way down. The best bite continues to come from large dead shrimp, and fiddler crabs, when available.

The large black drum have been spotty, but have cooperated on a few of the nicer days. These fish can be found around bridge pilings, large sandbars with deep drop-offs close by, and on the blue bird warm sunny days, on sandy flats.

I have noticed the water seems to be getting a little bit better looking, although it is very, very, low. Anglers should definitely continue to practice catch and release, and please be really be careful running around the lagoon with the lower water levels!
