tarpon

A much needed week-long vacation kept me off the water for a bit, but this week I got back in the game and the fishing was incredible. I focused my attention back into the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon this week, and it showed why this is my favorite time of the year! We had shots all day at large breeder redfish, gator trout, snook, and plenty of opportunities with tarpon, which have been very hard to keep buttoned up! Almost every shoreline with bait activity has been holding snook, tarpon, seatrout, and slot-sized redfish. These fish are feeding aggressively early in the morning and late in the evening, which is a typical summertime pattern. For the best, try using a gulp shrimp on a 1/8oz jighead or a rapala skitterwalk tight to the bushes.

If you’re in search of bull redfish, look for these fish holding around larger sandbars with a steep drop off. Unfortunately, they have been quite picky when it comes to the artificial game, but a chunk of mullet or ladyfish on a 5/0 circle hook has been pretty much irresistible. I highly recommend getting on the water early and off, as well, to avoid the nasty afternoon thunderstorms while taking advantage of the best bite. As always, please practice catch and release in the lagoon and rivers!
