Nice morning double up fishing plastics around the mangroves!

This week has been brutally hot, and the heat brought some dirty water along with it. But, not to worry, there is a few small adjustments that will definitely help you land more fish!

With the hot temps and water temps in the high 80s to low 90s, the morning bite has by far been the best. It definitely seems as if the bite has been shut down around 10 or so when temps start to peak. This week I definitely found better success fishing around deeper areas with lots of shade and structure, docks, deeper mangrove shorelines; really, anywhere that has a lot of cover with depth from 2-3 feet or more.

Early morning topwater couldn’t be better. Keep your eye out for finger mullet pods and try to imitate the small mullet as best as possible. Rapala skitter walks, and Zara spooks are a few of my go to baits. As the sun rises and the topwater bite fades, try switching to doa paddle tails and gulp shrimp in Natural colors (green or black and silver, or even pearl, are my favorites). It also never hurts to switch to live bait. The small 2-3 inch mullet have been plentiful and all species have been going crazy for them!

When fishing these mullet pods, and areas with lots of structure, there is no telling what you will see. This week we found great numbers of snook, redfish, trout and plenty of juvenile tarpon. Be sure to stay hydrated, get out early to enjoy the bite at its best, and keep an eye out for those nasty summer time thunderstorms!
