This week I have been taking advantage of the “work from home” orders and I’ve been hitting the water as soon as the work is done. It’s been windy all week, coming from different directions each day almost. The good news is water has been really clear, so I have been trying to learn my home waters as much as possible. It’s been interesting to see what kind of structure is in the areas that have been holding fish. This week I started out by picking a dock line with mangroves mixed in. In the video I dropped a few techniques I use when I’m scouting a new shoreline while fishing inshore, but for the most part my favorite setup has been a weedless jerk shad or paddletail. The majority of my success has been on Slayer Inc lure, but some Gulp and Gambler mixed in.

I noticed quickly that I could actually see the redfish and trout lurking in the area. So I took my time and tried my hand at sight fishing. Even though the majority of the bait is in more open water, most of the predators hugged the structure waiting for unsuspecting prey. Lucky for me, my lure became that prey, and I was able to get hooked up on a couple of nice fish. During the video, I kept calling trout, redfish, and redfish trout, but after a while, your eyes get adjusted and are able to make out what fish is from farther away. I came across dozens of reds, trout, and one lonely snook. I need to practice my presentation more because I scared dozens more fish than I caught, but I’m hoping to get better at it soon. I might also try live shrimp or cut bait soon too, I have been having a blast on artificial, but I would like to see the difference in hook up ratio in the same area.

If you have the chance to go out and sight fish I highly suggest it, even though you don’t connect with a lot of fish, it’s satisfying knowing you found the big ol girls. Good luck and have fun!
