Surf fishing Brevard County beaches will deliver better fishing opportunities occurring at the beginning of this week. The prior week had Space Coast beaches inundated with southerly winds and dirty water. Surf fishing for pompano was in every beach angler’s sights, but challenging conditions persisted. Bluefish, sharks and catfish lead the way on multiple days with whiting, pompano and sheepshead rounding out the highlighted species.
Surf fishing charters consistently bagged a few hard-earned pompano per day after weeding through less desirable species. Small jack crevalle, croakers and blue runners picked away at baits, which made the days a hardworking event constantly reeling in and baiting. With that being said, the effort put in was rewarded with double digit whiting and a few pompano for the dinner table! Fishing as far north as Cape Canaveral down to Sebastian Inlet held fish at various times sporadically. Pompano are an extremely fast-moving fish that can be there one day and gone the next. Keep up to date on recent fishing reports and networking with friends to stay on top of the bite. In conjunction with that remark, try to work different areas along the coast to identify water clarity and conditions that hold fish.
Pompano rigs remain the go-to option this time of year, especially essential for the species at hand. Pay special attention to the float rigs and colors to identify which color scheme garners more attention and catches. Water clarity and shades of the ocean are constantly fluctuating and will dictate to more experienced surf fishing anglers which float will have better results. Following through with a diversified strategy, I encourage a variety of rigs and colors to find what’s working best on each day of surf fishing.
Looking ahead at this week’s forecast, I see multiple days of good surf fishing conditions for beach-going anglers. Baits of choice will consist of sand fleas, fresh cut shrimp and clams in combination with Fish Bites. Clams have been especially successful with not only pompano, but black drum and sheepshead. So keep that in mind when getting bait from local shops to have a variety that meets the palette of above-mentioned
species. Get out this week and enjoy the rewards of one of my favorite times of year to chase an assortment of species.
