Big bull redfish are on everyone’s mind during the last part of August and first few weeks of September. These breeder-sized fish should be getting ready to start schooling up in the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon and this is a time of year when you can target them with artificial lures like a Rapala Skitterwalk top water plug or a size 12 Rapala X-Rap lipped diving plug. When these fish school up they become much more aggressive than at other times of the year. I also like to target them with spoons, jerk baits, and a variety of live baits as well.
Along the beaches, the Fall mullet run will begin in the next few weeks. This is another great place to target the big bulls; plus, you can get shots at snook which come back into season on September 1st. If you are able to catch a snook in the 28 to 32 inch range you can invite it home for dinner, as well! For those of you that have never caught a snook, you’re in for a real treat. These fish are fast, making blistering runs of 20 to 40 yards at a time. They also jump, turn cartwheels, and do head shakes on a regular basis. I specialize in targeting both of these species of fish so give me a call at 321-505-8217 and I can get you on a charter to have some fun on the water in the next few weeks.
