nice redfish

The big redfish round up in the Indian River Lagoon has come to a close for this year. The giant schools of 40 to 50-inch fish have disbanded and moved back to the inlets and nearshore waters where they will continue to keep our clients’ rods bent on days that we can fish these waters. This action will most likely be best between cool fronts that move through the area over the next four weeks. Tarpon, sharks, Spanish mackerel, Crevalle jack, and bluefish are other species we typically catch while trying to target the big bull reds in the nearshore waters on days that are calm enough to safely fish there.

In the lagoons, we’re turning our attentions to the available Speckled trout and redfish that are cruising many of our Indian River Lagoon shorelines. These fish are typically 12 to 27-inches in length and are usually very aggressive during morning outings. Later in the day they often lay up or rest near mangroves and weed patches and are not quite as aggressive. Finesse style baits like small plastic or live shrimp or small soft plastic jerk baits in the 3 to 4-inch range will normally get a reaction though. Captain Justin and I prefer the 3-4 inch Saltwater Assassin Shrimp Cocktails in the Bone Diamond, Papa Smurf, and clear color options where the water clarity is good. If it’s turbid or tanning stained the Root Beer, Mud Bug, and Drunk Monkey colors usually work best.

If you would like to climb aboard one of our Yamaha powered Skeeter SX-240 bay boats and go chase any of these fish, please give us a call at 321-636-3728 or visit our website and book your reservation online at finelinefishingcharters.com.
