black drum

Despite the crummy weather and so far minor fish kills the river has been experiencing lately, there is still some light at the end of the tunnel. By no means are algae blooms and fish kills a normal occurrence, but it definitely seems the river has been in a weird funk the last few years — and to be completely honest, not a single person knows a 100% sure fix. This is very disheartening, but on the flip side, there is things we can all do to pitch in a little bit to make things better. For example, practice catch and release as much as possible, avoid littering and try to pick up any garbage you might see. These small steps will lead to a better tomorrow until we can get things moving on a larger level.

Although we have had a fish kill which so far has been in an isolated area, the river has still been producing good numbers of fish. Winter always seems to be a good time for the black drum and they are thriving right now around deeper mangrove pockets. Anglers can find a solid bite pitching shrimp in deeper holes. With the recent cooler temps, it’s not uncommon to get a mixed bag of sea trout and redfish, as well!

This week was a pretty steady bite and gives some hope for things to come! Everyone stay positive, do your small part, and hopefully we can turn things around for a better tomorrow.
