bass fishing

It’s been a busy past week of fishing! I spent three days on Lake Garcia and one VERY windy day at Stick Marsh.

The bite at Garcia was so-so one day and good the other two. First day was a fly fishing adventure and the fly of choice was a chartreuse gurgled. Once the sun came up the bite slowed and we started to keep it going by tying on a Henn Pecker streamer and caught bass and some nice bluegill. The other two days, the topwater bite was on first thing then kept the momentum going later in the day with a Gambler Burner Worm in the black with blue top.

It’s funny that one day is so different than the next when color choices determine the bite. Most of the older bass beds now empty after the spawn are being used by big Tilapia.

bass report

My last day fishing I had second thoughts on going but my friend that asked me to come fish with him hadn’t changed his mind. Our destination was Stick Marsh. Winds started the day with 10-15 southerly winds and plenty of white caps, too. Anyone that has been on the body of water knows that wind is not your friend here. Since we were fishing on the southern wall of the farm it shouldn’t have been too bad except for the ride to and from this area. I know my butt left the seat several times.

We started out way inside the eel grass with no luck so we moved to the outer part of the grass which by then was a good 200-300 yards away. FOLKS, if you love to fish — and fish a lot — if you don’t have some brand of shallow water anchoring system on your boat there was no way you could have fished this area. You were just a leaf on the water. We anchored down and worked an area before moving to the next and doing the same to keep catching fish. Blades Swim jigs, Yo Zuri 1.5 Square Bill cranks and my little friend a Yo Zuri 3DS #70 size suspending jerk bait brought the three biggest fish in the boat.

It was a great day on the water except by the end of our adventure the 30 mph wind ride back was the only downfall of the day. Knowing where — and where not to — run on plane on this lake made me feel a little better, though. We have a full moon coming up at the end of the week which will change the way we will fish and change up our patterns. It’s great to live in this area we have in southern Brevard County.
