cobia

It’s been another fantastic week for our anglers here at Fineline Fishing Charters. Captain Justin and I have been catching a wide variety of species along the near shore and offshore waters on our recent trips.

The first of these is cobia. We’ve been finding lots of cobia in the 60 to 90 foot depths while slow trolling for king mackerel. One of the things that we like to do is keep a pitch rod ready with a jig or hook that we can put a live bait on and get out to these fish immediately when we see them come to the boat. This often allows us to hook the cobia while it is still interested in what may be hanging around our boats. We had multiple occasions when two or sometimes even three fish would pop up at a time. This makes for some exciting action as you can imagine! Quite a few of these fish were undersized so we were careful to net them instead of gaff them to make sure that we can release them unharmed.

Going back to the king mackerel, our bite has been very strong this week while fishing those dips and we’ve been getting a lot of king mackerel while fishing for tarpon in the near shore waters as well. Live pogies and pilchards have been the best baits to use for both species. Our biggest king mackerel this week was 32 pounds and our biggest tarpon was about 130 pounds. You can check out our Fineline Fishing Charters Facebook page for a live streaming video of one of these fish that we fought and landed last Saturday. Both Capt and Justin and I have trips available starting the second week of August for anyone that is interested.
