big lagoon redfish

Jimmy realized his dream to catch a nice Mosquito Lagoon redfish. In fact he hooked several on this trip with Capt. Mark Wright!

“Dirty water be damned,” I say and so does Jimmy who was in town for the recent launch. We hit the south end of the Mosquito Lagoon about two o’clock Saturday afternoon. The water was murky along the eastern wall, but given the windy conditions it’s where we needed to be.

Starting the trip with a quick casting lessen, Jimmy threw soft plastic Z-Man lures with absolutely no luck. An hour into things we opted to try and feed the fish rather than fool them. It was a good decision to change our strategy. Though the bite was not exactly strong Jimmy managed three solid hook-ups and two boated redfish.

The one that got away was not the biggest fish, but it might have been the smartest of the trio as it was able to charge the boat and wrap itself around the Power-Pole stake before either of us could react!

Sunday morning Tony and I launched early into the central region of the Mosquito Lagoon. We set up in the Pole and Troll Zone near a prominent and well known island and worked our way east. With the wind at our backs Tony made fantastically longs casts with his Bone colored Skitterwalk. The trout we eager to attack the plug, however it was tough keeping them hooked. Four nice trout came off the bent rods before an average trout made it to the boat. I have no idea how many “blow-ups” Tony had that did not get hooked at all, but it was exciting to see the trout become aggressive again!
