redfish with hughey

The water is on the rise and the fish are loving it! The last few weeks, the water in the lagoon has come up a tremendous amount — several feet in most areas. With all the added water, combined with large influences of mullet, fishing mangrove shorelines has been very productive. Fish from 10-35inches are in large numbers around any schools of mullet, large or small.

Anglers can find a solid bite tossing plastics like Gulp shrimp, DOA paddle tails, and really anything small with a good action or scent. Topwater plugs also continue to produce early and can provide some great excitement. Another way to catch these redfish is with live bait. A small mullet on a 4/0 circle hook or even a larger chunk will do the trick.

As we move into fall we should see some larger breeder fish make an appearance. The bite has been easy to locate — find the mullet, and you’ll find the fish!

I’d like to remind everyone that the redfish are now catch and release only, so take great care of them and they can help provide more for future generations to come.
