black drum on Christmas

KK with his Christmas drum caught sight-fishing on a handpicked shrimp.

Merry Christmas! This week has been a roller coaster with the weather and the fishing! Cold then hot, and rainy and windy. Mother Nature can’t seem to make up her mind. But with the wild weather, the one fish that still remains consistent is the black drum.

The docks, bridges, and even the flats of the Indian River and Banana River Lagoons have been holding plenty of schooling black drum. On the cool windy days the canals with deeper holes have been producing best, and on the flat warmer days these fish have been crawling the shallow flats in large numbers looking for crabs, shrimp, and any other small morsel they can get their mouth around. Look for these fish off the edges of dock pilings and flats that have deep water access close by.

If you find a school of fish, the best option has been a hand picked shrimp. If for some reason the fish seem to be finicky and don’t want to cooperate, try a small crab initiation lure smothered in Gulp juice. Savage Gear makes a great lure for this presentation, and the Gulp Spray is also effective in helping to entice the drum. This time of the year, it’s not uncommon to find schools of fish in the 40-50 lb range, and they always are a great fight on light tackle.
