surf fishing with friends

I was pleasantly surprised to get a call from my friend and surf fishing mentor Larry Finch. Larry was going to be in the area and inquired if I wanted to get together and fish. I jumped at the chance. Conditions were not great with the skies overcast and a slight drizzle in the air. The water had a nice green hint of color but the surf was a bit rough and the current was ripping south to north.

While waiting for my partner to show, I spoke with a few fishermen on the beach who were having difficulty holding bottom with 4-5 oz pyramids, although a fellow using 6 oz sputniks had no problem. Larry arrived and we hit the beach. Able to keep out bait in place with 4 oz sputniks, we both set up and Larry had two whiting landed before I completed my setup. The day continued at a slow, but steady pace. I landed a limit of six pompano, a few whiting, and a variety of Jacks, Blues, Cats, etc. Larry (holding a commercial license) outpaced me in every category, even bite-offs. All fish were caught on sand fleas.

The afternoon came and we wrapped things up. A slow, but steady day, a cooler full of fish, and a pleasant day on the beach with a good friend!
