snook

Spring is almost here and the snook bite couldn’t be better! The warmer days we have had lately have really had the water temps climbing and with that, the snook are hungry. From pitching the mangroves and docks with paddle tail jigs, to fishing bucktails and tossing large live baits around the inlet, the bite has been very good!

Luckily, there has been quite a large amount of bait in the surf and the snook are following. Look for large bait pods scattered throughout the surf or along the jettys and the snook will be close by. This week, pinfish, croakers and pigfish have been the best bet. Artificial anglers can find a solid bite at night using 1.5 to 2oz red tail hawk jigs in really any color — a small pop off the bottom is a great way to entice a reaction strike.

Anglers in the lagoon can find good numbers of fish up tight to the mangroves on the edge of deeper shorelines. When in the river, small DOA paddle tails and Gulp shrimp are my personal “go to” snook baits! But, if artificial isn’t your thing, a nice handpicked shrimp or small finger mullet on a bare hook can always do the trick!

The warmer the weather gets, the better I foresee the fishing. I’m definitely excited about the few weeks to come!
