spanish mackerel nearshore

Our nearshore bite has been really good around the Sebastian Inlet area. Live pilchards and greenies are the two best baits to use right now, especially for targeting Spanish mackerel (up to 5lbs,), king mackerel (up to 25lbs.), and snook in the surf break or larger species like sharks or tarpon. Rig these on a VMC 7385 circle hook and some 60 pound Suffix fluorocarbon leader. The same baits will work on the larger 15 to 25 inch Speckled trout and 20 to 40 inch snook that are in the lagoon system hanging out around the docks and mangroves. In the upper Indian River and middle southern Mosquito Lagoon areas, there are quite a few slot size trout and slot to under-slot sized redfish. Chug Bug topwater plugs or small Rapala Skitterwalk plugs seem to be working well on both of these species before 8am.
