pompano

This past week we had great surf conditions after the weeds pushed out and the water cleared up. The main catch this week was large whiting and pompano. The hot bite has been at the start of the incoming tide and the lower end of the outgoing tide with the larger fish sitting out deep past the 1st bar. The bait of choice has been crab and clam flavored fishbites and live small crabs fished on standard pompano rig with either no beads or a small green/pink float. Several limits of pompano where caught this week up in the area here in Volusia County.

This upcoming week, the surf and high winds will limit the surf fishing, but as the weekend moves closer the winds and high surf are forecast to lay down. As long as the water temperatures stay down as they have been, the larger schools of pompano will hang around. It will be possible with the high wind and higher surf if you can find a spot on the river out of the winds that the schools will move into the river close to the inlet and the causeways.
