headwaters bass fishing

I was able to squeeze in two days on the water last week. Both days were on Headwaters. I’m still very new to this body of water, so my adventures have been in the same areas as before. We fished in an area with deep water pits, some as deep as 20 feet. Tuesday’s night we had a good topwater bite along the hydrilla edges. Prop baits are a good choice for this. Without working away from the edges too far you can work the prop in a short pop and sit to be in the strike zone.

Early in the morning the bass would come off the edge by 6 or 7 feet but as the sun became higher in the sky, they stayed very tight to the cover. We both used different prop baits, I was throwing my Yo Zuri 3D Prop and my friend was throwing the medium size Torpedo.

On the second day on the water we couldn’t buy a topwater bite. Strange how this happens. I had an epiphany the night before on a style of bait to use on the hydrilla edges, so as to stay more in the strike zone. This technique is something I really don’t do hardly at all, but the color I chose was a color I always had done well with in the early 90’s on Stick Marsh. So while my partner was busy trying other stuff to get bit, I tied up a Wacky Worm set up with a bubblegum Senko 5” worm and proceeded to catch one after another on it. I ended up using the whole bag that morning but towards the end was sharing them with my friend once he conceded to his stuff. We caught 30 bass that morning.

All in all, 2 great days fishing with a friend for a few hours in the morning and leaving by 11am. I hope for everyone to be safe in their lives as we go through the tough times upon us.
