seatrout and snook

This week, and really the last few, have been spectacular fishing, to say the least. The snook and trout bite has really been off the charts! Even on the windy and cooler days the snook have really been responding well.

Most of my fish have been holding tight to the mangroves around residential canals. The deeper the canal, and the more brush, the more snook. Look for these fish floating just below the surface between 10 and 2 when the sun is at its peak. Sometimes these fish can act really spooky; therefore, I prefer using a really light bait. 1/16 oz jigheads with natural z-man shrimp have been doing well, considering it’s a smaller and lighter presentation. A medium size shrimp on a small 3/0 circle hook with a foot long stretch of 30lb leader has been crushing it, as well! It’s hard to downsize your leader when snook fishing because of their razor sharp gill plates.

The sea trout have been mixed in the same areas of the snook and are feeding using the same techniques. If you find a stretch of thick mangrove trees with a steep drop off next to deeper water, regardless of which lagoon you might be in, you’re almost sure to find some good fish!

I’m so excited with the Numbers of snook lately, and really can’t wait to see what the spring and summer will be like!
