bull red

It might be cold and windy, but the redfish bite is hot! This week was brutal! Windy, cold, but the redfish definitely haven’t seemed to mind. The more cold we get, the more consistent the fishing will become.

The redfish from 18″, all the way to +45″ have been showing in great numbers. Smaller fish in the “slot” size range have been biting good in areas where shallow flats dip off into deeper holes; specifically, areas with muddy bottom and lots of mullet. If you find a flat that’s a foot or less with a pocket of 2-3ft of water and some mangroves, you are sure to find the reds.

Artificial baits such as Gulp are getting the job done, but just as you feel the cool, the fish are feeling it too, so slowing your baits way way down or even switching to dead shrimp and cut baits are the way to go!

Larger fish are stacking in their usual deeper holes, large channels, bridges, and various deep water structures. The bite remains consistent for the bulls, large blue crabs, fist size chunks of mullet, and even live pin fish when available are all great choices when fished on a fish finder rig with 1-3oz egg sinkers, depending on depth and current.

I highly recommend circle hooks for these fish as they are our brute stock of breeders and help us to create a sustainable fishery for years to come. And please, if you can help it, let’s let the slot fish go for years to come so others can enjoy this amazing sport.
