mosquito lagoon redfish

I enjoyed a fine morning with Johnny “little-fish” Gay on Tuesday.

Leaving the boat ramp at O’dark-thirty I traveled farther north than normal to fish a stretch of the Mosquito Lagoon I haven’t fished in several years.

Pushing towards the shoreline is was obvious the thick schools of mullet were being harassed by the occasional big trout, lots of average trout and the occasional redfish.

Johnny tried his luck using a Tsunami K9 Walker on a light outfit sporting a Tsunami Shield reel I’m testing. I put this outfit into Johnny’s hands so he could give me a non-biased opinion on the reel. While he liked the reel completely the fish only halfheartedly smacked at the lure.

I repeatedly caught smallish trout on a Z-Man Diezel Minnowz rigged weedless. Changing Johnny to a Diezel Minnows on a EZ Keeperz hook was the right move and Johnny scored a trout and redfish in short order.

Moving down the shoreline and leaving the action left us in dead man’s land for a while. Eventually finding more mullet being worked over by more big trout I tied the K9 Walker on my rod and quickly hooked a huge fish from the poling platform. No head shaking for this Gator, she fought like a redfish, scraping bottom and pulling drag….

Alas, she straightened the hook at boat side while Johnny was getting ready to grab the leader and land the fish. I was really looking forward to posing with this big girl! A bit later I boated another decent trout (23 inches) that ate a Diezel Minnowz.

We finished up our trip in the Pole and Troll Zone and caught a few more trout and a wee flounder. All in all an good morning with one of my favorite people!
