snook season florida

Captain Justin Ross and myself here at Fineline Fishing Charters have been eagerly awaiting the opening of our east coast fall snook season. This kicks off what will be two great months of fishing in the Port Canaveral and Sebastian Inlet areas for our Charter clients.

The fall mullet run generally coincides with the opening of snook season which really gets these fish fired up. Anyone that has ever seen videos of showering mullet as snook blast and cart wheel through them will be just as excited about the potential catching opportunities over the next eight weeks as we are. This heightened activity lasts all month but crescendos around the full and new moon phases.

We start our mornings casting top water plugs and lipped diving plugs into the schools of mullet. An 11cm sized Rapala skitter walk or the size 12 or 14 Rapala X rap lipped diving plug catch a majority of our dawn and dusk snook. Once the artificial bite slows we cast net mullet and pitch them in among the bait pods that are being fed upon throughout the day. Tarpon, shark, bluefish, Crevalle jack, ladyfish, Speckled trout, flounder, and even an occasional King mackerel will also strike these plugs and live baits.
