Low water levels have definitely changed the game this week on the Space Coast. Despite some wild rainstorms over the weekend the water levels still seem to be quite low. With the low water, the clarity remains quite well! Most of the region is experiencing very clean water, although I don’t expect it to last, it’s a very good sight. With the water levels being lower than usual most of the fish seem to really be bunched up along any mangrove shoreline with small depressions and larger sandbars. You may cover miles of shoreline only to find a 100 yard stretch with schools of fish ranging from redfish, trout, snook, and even a few tarpon showing up with the warmer conditions.

My favorite way to fish this time of year is starting early with top water plugs and Gulp artificial soft baits around the mullet pods. Another great technique I like to utilize is fishing large cut baits, or even finger mullet when available. I like to work the mullet with artificials until I get a bite or see other signs of life, large pushes, v wakes, or even fish popping on baitfish, then being quiet and making long casts with live or dead bait definitely produces good numbers. With low clean water it’s very critical to be as quiet as possible, push poles or even wading can really make a difference.

I highly suggest everyone catch and release for future generations and get out and enjoy the clean water while we can; come summer and rainy season it’s subject to change.
