lagoon redfish

Colder weather means a hot midday bite. We’ve definitely come to the colder portion of the year here in central Florida and the fish are responding accordingly. Morning action on most days is a little slow but mid morning and midday action has been very good over the past week and a half. Speckled trout, redfish black drum and even a few small snook have been landed by our customers.

Shallow flats that typically produce first thing in the morning have not been productive at all for us. Instead we’ve been targeting fish along deeper sections of the lagoon in 3 to 6 feet of water and also in many of the residential canals and dredge holes throughout the region. This deeper water is more stable and insulated from temperature fluctuations caused by overnight temperatures in the 50s and 60s. The fish here are more receptive to biting early in the morning.

We’ve downsized our baits and are using soft plastic Saltwater Assassin lures from about 2 to 4 inches in size. Once we get done playing with the speckled trout then it’s time to move out onto the sun warmed flats in search of redfish. Cut baits are working better than anything else for these fish right now so set up in a place where you see mullet schools and cast these cut baits out and wait. If a redfish is around it won’t take long before they sniff it out, eat it and you’re hooked up!
