We enjoyed a great topwater bite on Thursday as Bill helped me scout for Friday and Saturday charters.

Armed with a small saltwater Chug Bug, Bill caught quite a few slot sized spotted seatrout and lost twice as many as he boated. I can’t be sure if Fate played a role in losing so many fish or if the inline hooks on the plug were maybe a bit too small. We won’t ever know for sure, though we’ll re-fit the lure with slightly larger hooks and see if it helps.

As usual we shadowed huge schools of fingerling mullet as they streamed along the west shoreline of the Mosquito Lagoon. The fish were active in super shallow water out to about two feet of depth. After the sun got high and bright we found a better bite outside of prominent sandbar drop-offs. As long as mullet were present so were the trout!

A message coming late on Thursday afternoon cancelling Friday’s trip certainly changed my Friday plans and I decided to take the day off.

Saturday we started with one rod tossing Z-Man Diezel Minnowz and two using popping floats and live shrimp. Setting up on the outside edges of Tiger Shoals we attempted to find a good trout bite. We never did, though we certainly did catch some trout. The fishing just never really got cranked-up for us.

Changing spots every so often we eventually used up our stash of live shrimp along with a bag of frozen mullet for a tally of one redfish, 8 trout and far too many catfish. Still, the company was fantastic and all three generations of anglers on board caught fish!
