cobia fishing

October is a great month for cobia fishing!

SEPTEMBER RECAP

We enjoyed an extended summer with the best fishing and weather September has given in many years. Live bait filled the beach with sharks, tarpon and snook all very willing and ready to eat them. King mackerel & cobia were very abundant with blackfin tuna, mahi & the occasional wahoo in the mix. Bottom fishing for vermillion snapper, amberjack & grouper was also very productive. All in all a unbelievable September!

OCTOBER NEARSHORE FORECAST

Fall colors come to Port Canaveral and Cocoa Beach in the form of red with black dots. Action packed fishing in the pogy pods is just about the best fishing anyone could ever ask for. Red drum & sharks in full force. Tarpon and cobia welcomed bonuses. Literally every cast is a bite and a potential battle with a giant. Bring the live bait back to the beach on tide changes and the sook bite is phenomenal. Light tackle for sheepshead, black drum and mangrove snapper in the port and along the jetties will also provide nonstop action. Triple tail fishing can also be very productive for those with a little more patience but nearshore in October is filled with options and is where everyone will want to be most days.

OCTOBER OFFSHORE FORECAST

Cobia fishing in October is phenomenal! Big bull sharks are where you find the cobia so you either muscle up and bring them to the surface with heavy tackle or work jigs and live bait along the bottom and get lucky. Mahi fishing immediately following large swells from passing storms can be phenomenal, but the trick is hitting it just right. If the mahi fishing is unproductive the bottom fishing for vermillion snapper and amberjack will make for a good back up plan. Large vermillion snapper do make great bait for grouper so drop one down and see if you can get lucky and if not put your bait on ice for dinner. One thing to remember about October is do not force it. Calm days that allow time to cover water and switch things up is what you need because live bait trolling the reef will not produce day in and day out plus the fishing nearshore in calm seas is just too good to fight rough seas.
