jack-crevalle

This week’s adventures have covered much of the central east portion of Florida. From giant jack crevalle along the beaches from Sebastian to Vero to king mackerel offshore of Port Canaveral to black drum in the Indian River lagoon, it’s been a pretty good week.

We ran across the jacks looking for schools of tarpon down near the Vero Cove. The fish were schooled up and we casted large chugged style plugs at them. It only took seconds before these fish would explode on the lures and the battle was on! These big crevalle are world class fighters. Pulling drag and racing half way across the ocean before getting tired.

One the next day we went 60 miles to the north to 8A reef in search of king mackerel. Yep, they were right on cue. Slow trolling with live mullet on a wire stinger rig was the game plan and as you can imagine the mackerel showed interest in these baits immediately. Most of the kings are running 10 to 25 pounds right now but there have been some pushing into the low 40 pound range.

During the last potion of the week we decided to try the lagoons. Black drum are still active on many of the bridges from Pineda to Max Brewer. Saltwater Assassin 4-inch shrimp or paddle-tails tipped with a piece of fishbites got them going. We also put out some chunk baits a few days near the shorelines around Banana Creek for some slot sized redfish once the drum action slowed for the day.

Right now is one of the best times of year to get out on the water, and although we don’t have very many available days this week, there are some opening the rest of the month if you’re interested.
