redfish

Spring has sprung and the redfish bite is definitely picking up! This week the redfish from 18 to 45 inches or more have been cooperating quite well. Slot fish have been tight to shallow mangrove shorelines. One key has been looking for the small glass minnow pods. With all the glass minnows around, the artificial bite has been good when tossing smaller plastics like gulp paddle tail baits and doa paddle tails in silver mullet or black and silver. I personally prefer throwing more natural colors.

Anglers looking to fish bait can find a solid bite on small live shrimp on a 1/0 hook free-lined tight to the mangroves. The bull redfish bite has picked up as well. Deep channels with shallow sandbars close by have been holding good numbers of fish from 35 to 45 inches or more. The go to baits have been large mullet chunks, 1/4 blue crabs fished on 30lb leader and a 6/0 hook. It’s not very common this time of year to catch these bulls on Artificial baits, but it is possible. Larger 4-5 inch swimbaits in darker colors seem to do the trick, scented soft plastics like gulp and zman are always a great go to especially for fussy fish on calm and sunny days.
