topwater redfish

Using mullet chunks Harry gets several nice reds on a recent trip with Capt. Mark Wright. This over-slot fish measured just over thirty-one inches!

It was nice to be busy again this past week and was especially nice for the redfish to cooperate!

Even though the wind blew during a couple of trips early in the week the reds ate with enthusiasm. Cut mullet chunks offered on grass line edges dividing the super skinny flats from slightly deeper sandy bottom regions proved to be most productive. These “highways” are often traveled by predators cruising along in search of an easy meal.

Be prepared to catch more than a few hardheads while soaking your natural bait chunks. Savvy anglers will cut their chunk baits in large enough pieces to make it difficult for the catfish to get the entire piece in their mouth. They’ll still pick it up and swim off with it until the line becomes too tight, then the bait is either released by the fish or pulled from its mouth by the pressure of your bent rod. Either way the chunk bait is still viable and ready for another bite!

over-slot redfish

Tony put down his top-water plug long enough to catch this slot redfish tailing in a shoreline patch of grass. The fish greedily ate a Z-Man Curly Tailz!

The most exciting news of the week is finding tailing redfish in lots of different areas. They were exhibiting classic behavior, rooting in the thickest grass patches. In fact the grass was so thick it was difficult to place a lure into their sight window without dragging a line over them.

By far the best lure for us this week was a Z-Man Scented Curly Tailz rigged on the new Finesse Bulletz jighead. This jighead is perfectly sized for the smaller Z-Man soft plastic lures and offers by far the most weedless presentation I’ve ever used!
