Big redfish

What a week of fishing! I was able to dodge the red snapper zoo and I couldn’t have been happier! July in general has been a pretty great month but the last few weeks I have been seeing a lot more bull redfish than expected for this time of the year which is a great sign for the months to come!

Most fish have been in their typical spots along deeper edges with shallow water close by, spoil islands with steep drop offs, and large sandbars such as whale tail and tiger shoals in the mosquito lagoon, I like to push pole the edge of these bars until I find an area with bait activity, or even signs of large fish pushing wakes. Be as stealthy as possible when approaching these fish. A large chunk of mullet, ladyfish, or half a blue crab will usually do the trick! The artificial enthusiast can expect these fish to be very finicky but a quiet, well-placed cast with a 4 inch gulp shrimp in natural or pearl white can entice a bite!

I’m really looking forward to the few months to come with more bulls expected from now through November. Take great care of these fish when releasing! They need a little extra care especially with the heat. Remember, these are our breeders and will be making many more for our future generations!
