bass

I spent both Friday and Saturday on the Stick Marsh. Pretty much working in the same areas as the previous weeks. The Shad spawning activity is in full mode. Friday we fished on the Farm side where the bass were crushing the Shad up next to the dike berm. We were throwing topwater prop baits but the bass were missing our baits. My friend was throwing his Torpedo and I was fly fishing throwing a Stealth Bomber fly pattern.

We soon changed to a small suspending jerk bait and I put on a Minnow pattern. The last fish we boated coughed up a small Shad which made us change our patterns. Once we did this we were hooking up almost every cast. Once the sun came up higher in the sky the Shad went deeper and the bite slowed. We moved to our next area where the schooling activity has been and were not disappointed. Lipless crankbaits and suspending jerk baits brought fish boatside.

Happy wife, happy life!

On Saturday’s outing we were met at the parking lot at 5:30 with stiff south winds so we stayed on the Stick Marsh side of the impoundment. I was lucky to have had my wife with me to show her some fun. It didn’t take long for her first experience of seeing first hand of the Shad being busted on with the bass in a feeding frenzy larger than I’ve seen so far. She hooked up as soon as her Rattlin Vibe hit the water. We managed to catch over 20 fish that morning, and were off the waters by 10am and stopped for breakfast before hitting the house. I think she’ll come more often after this day got her hooked.

All-in-all, the bite has been great starting our days at O’ Dark Thirty in the morning and off the water by 10am.
