snook

One of a few nice snook caught with Capt. Alex Hughey this week.

The snook must know the season is closed! The past few weeks the snook bite has been going strong! From Sebastian inlet all the way to Ponce and everywhere in between, from the river to the inlet the snook bite is about as good as it gets! Snook is by far one of my favorite fish to target. Aggressive eats, fast runs, and awesome table fare make them one awesome species!

In the lagoons, the snook bite has been exceptional this week. The deeper mangrove shorelines and docks have been the ticket! Cast small paddle tail jigs and gulp shrimp as tightly as possible to mangroves or pilings, and hang on! Early morning these fish can also be caught on small top water plugs such as the Rapala skitterwalk and Zara spook. The inlets have also been producing good numbers of fish. Most can be found on the edge of the jetties or drop-offs staging to spawn. These fish really prefer live bait, and it’s hard to beat pigfish, pinfish, mullet and croakers fished drifting along the bottom.

Try to take very good care of these fish to keep them healthy and in spawning shape! You can significantly reduce the toll the fight takes on the fish by beefing up your tackle. I use an eight foot rod with a stout tip, and a 6000 size reel loaded with 40lb braid to a 50lb fluorocarbon leader. On the bottom end, I rig a 5/0 J-style hook and a small pinch weight to get the bait down the water column a little bit.
