snook fishing

This week has been a roller coaster here on the Space Coast. Cool weather, rain, and king tides bringing in excess amounts of water — not to mention the time changing. It’s been quite the change up to say the least!

Even with all the changing conditions the snook bite seems to hold strong throughout all the lagoon systems. This week, almost every deeper shoreline with thick mangroves and a mucky bottom seemed to be the place to be for the snook! Fortunately, with the cooler weather, it wasn’t as important to get up early. Higher sun and warmer temps in the middle of the day definitely proved to be best.

The most simple approach has been to start by throwing artificial baits, and covering ground until you find a good bite. This can be crucial and much more fun than just sitting around drowning bait. Swimbaits such as Slayer and DOA, and my favorite, Gulp, are all great search baits for snook. Find a shoreline that looks fishy and get after it!

Paying close attention to depth changes, changes in structure and trees, any sort of indifference within a bank line are important and can help you create a pattern. Once you stumble upon a few fish or maybe figure out an area you feel comfortable with, switching to small live baits such as finger mullet, pinfish, and pigfish are great ways to put good numbers in the boat. These methods work great for almost every species, and with more cold on the way, I would think the trout and redfish bite will be picking up as well!

As always please try to catch and release for future generations, and get out and enjoy the cooler weather!
