snook fishing

Snook fishing on the Space Coast couldn’t be much better this week! Inshore, nearshore, it’s been pretty much as good as it gets, from pitching the trees to tossing live baits along troughs and sloughs in the surf the bite has been incredible.

Snook season is approaching quick and September is one of the better months for catching as well. Inshore snook definitely relate to cover using trees, sticks, mangrove roots, and dock pilings for ambush spots, these areas are often hard to fish but with great risk equals reward. Large live mullet fished tight to the bushes is one good way to get fish to come a little out of their comfort zone, but my favorite way is pitching and skipping soft plastics under the bushes, keeping your tip low is a huge key when doing this, consider the trees razor blades as they are very sharp, when hooking fish or even just skip casting the lower the better to keep the line under the trees is very effective.

This week fish ranged from 15 all the way to 36+ inches, artificial baits that simulate mullet like the d.o.a cal, gulp jerkshads, and the no live bait needed lil mullet all are great baits that skip well and produce good bites. With snook season approaching I highly encourage everyone to please catch and release in the river, the population is much more sustainable around the inlets and beaches and these fish migrate and move much more than our river fish, as long as we continue to have warm winters I expect them to thrive more and more each year, but let’s all do our part to take care of the fishery, even if it means letting go some of these awesome specimens.
