seatrout

The spring trout bite has been living up to its reputation! This week has been some nice weather and the trout bite has really picked up. The trout this week have been ranging anywhere from 15 to 25 inches. Pretty much every spoil island, drop off, and trough in the Indian and Mosquito lagoon have been holding these toothy critters.

Trout fishing can be very fun and pretty easy for anglers of all ages and skill levels. The artificial enthusiast can find a good bite using plastic lures such as the D.O.A paddle-tails, Rapala Skitterwalk, Mirrolure Mirrodine and my go to a Gulp shrimp. The colors I find to be best are pearl white, pearl white with a chartreuse tail and root beer with a green tail. As for topwaters and sub surface lures like the Mirrolure, I find the brighter the better for trout. Chartreuse, white and even hot pink all work really well!

If you’re just looking for an easy bite or maybe you’re bringing the kids out for something to do a popping cork and a live shrimp can be simply irresistible for sea trout. Simply toss out the cork and give it a small twitch, just to get some attention but not so much to where you drag it away from the fish’s strike zone. Another good method which can yield a good seatrout bite and even get larger fish is a 4 to 6 inch finger mullet rigged free lined on a 4/0 owner circle hook. Spring is typically the best time for seatrout in large numbers and size and they are chewing quite well lately! I highly encourage catch and release as i am with all my charters.
