Once per year I sharpen my straight razor on a quality 15,000 grit stone. It is no good for shaving until it has been stropped 120 times after stoning.
With stropping in mind I move on to fishing.
I made a small strop by gluing a small piece of good, top grain (not suede) leather to some plywood and charged the leather with jeweler’s rouge. With ten strokes on each side and ten on the front side of the hook I get a smooth and very sharp point.
If you feel for a burr on brand new, right out of the package hooks, you’ll find at least one burr.
If you make a strop and burnish your hooks while closing the barb on your hooks you’ll discover catch and release with no discernable loss to keepers.
