fort pierce snook

Tony loves tossing topwater plugs to shoreline snook. This one ate a bone colored Skitterwalk!

Strong winds have again kept us off the water with one exception. Topwater Tony braved the NNW winds on the last day of the year 2019. While we expected winds less than ten miles per hour at sunrise and did indeed have that, things quickly changed.

Our starting point offered perfect shelter from the wind and this particular area has a bit of surviving grass just outside of the mangrove tree line. Blessed with an abundance of baitfish the predators were having their way with the mullet and other little critters flitting across the bottom.

Tony’s first three casts received plenty of attention though nothing was actually hooked. Cast number four turned out to be a nice little snook that had us both scrambling to avoid a break-off as the fish wound its way around some old pilings. After several tense moments the line cleared the obstruction and Tony boated his prize.

Shortly thereafter, Tony has another blow-up on his plug and a feisty jack tests his drag. The jack eventually loses the battle and is quickly released. Unfortunately, the bite abruptly ended about this time. Three more hours covering lots of ground and shoreline only improved our catch by landing two tiny snook, each about a foot long. I barely fished this trip and the few casts I made with a Zman Minnowz produced only one dink trout.

I’m certainly ready for the winds to recede enough to allow us to move freely about. I’ll be exploring several areas I haven’t visited in a very long time; areas which have treated me well in previous years!
