Surf fishing charters along the Space Coast have provided for a mixed bag of species. Snook continue to highlight the day with larger fish remaining amongst the most commonly caught. With the fall mullet run in full effect this trend looks to continue into the next couple weeks until the water temperatures drop and these baitfish move down to the south. Not only are snook being frequently caught but tarpon are still being jumped from shore bound anglers looking to get in on the action.
Our surf fishing trips in Cocoa Beach have been providing pompano, black drum and whiting. Most of the black drum and pompano are enticed with fresh peeled shrimp and coquina scented Fishbites. As the seaweed and slime pulse in and out with the tides look for the first and second trough to provide your best chance at these two species. Whiting in the small to medium range have already started to see an uptick as we reach further into September and the beginning of October should see this continue.
The central region from souther Patrick Air Force Base down to Sebastian Inlet has easily been the best location for snook fishing of late. Targeting rocky areas, troughs and runouts will remain the best areas for seeing snook feeding frenzies along with Spanish mackerel and tarpon. Match the hatch when observing what kind of baitfish the predatory species are keying in on. Everything from mullet, to horn bellies and glass minnows alike are in the mix. So choose your live baits or artificial lures accordingly.
