Last week has been challenging to say the least on the shore. Weather has been all over the place as has been the wave action. The weeds too seem to be a hit and miss mess. BUT if you’re persistent the fish are there. I’ve brought in tons of margate, ladyfish, and recently a bunch of jacks which I haven’t personally seen in two months? Today, a keeper black drum. I’ll take it. Tarpon continue to prowl but I’ve been unable to catch the nice live bait on shore I usually use. I’ve literally ceased getting croakers, pinfish, whiting, etc… the last two weeks. Usually a small hook and a piece of shrimp and I’m hauling in fresh tarpon bait all day but just NOTHING? For me at least, I’m noticing some species shifts. Where, generally, are you fishing? I was down by Floridana Beach this weekend and the weeds were just too much. I tried pushing through it for a few hours (with a couple thunderstorms in between) because I was seeing so many tarpon jumping out there — but like you, I couldn’t get any bait. I got one catfish and a migraine’s worth of weeds on every cast. I’m really hoping this sargassum situation is a temporary anomaly and not the new normal…
Mostly I hit extreme south Satellite. If the weeds are bad there I’ll go around half way between Sebastian and Melbourne. They really are two totally different places from my perspective. I hit Satellite for 45 min to toss a spoon Thursday at sunset and while I didn’t catch anything there were zero weeds. I’m praying that holds up for the weekend. We’ll see….
