pompano fishing

Summer surf fishing along the Space Coast looks to heat up for big fish. The month of May marks a real transition in the conditions and species on local beaches. Surf fishing anglers who are looking to target big snook, tarpon, flounder and pompano will be delighted with the weather and species on hand. Knowing how these weather patterns will affect the fishing gives anglers a leg up in the preparation and execution for successful catches.

While the spring fishing delivered great catches of pompano and whiting we’re looking for some of this to persist into May and June. Residential pompano which remain in the area throughout the summer months will be on top of many anglers target species. Pompano rigs with white, chartreuse and orange floats baited with fresh shrimp and sand fleas give anglers the best probability of success. Be sure to fish the outer sandbar with long casts and keep one rod short in the first trough to find the most prime zones to fish. Whiting should also be on tap in these same zones using similar rigs.

whiting

Flounder fishing hit high gear these last two weeks surf fishing near Satellite Beach south to Sebastian Inlet. This pattern looks to continue into May with many anglers either targeting them or catching them accidentally. When targeting flounder in the surf there’s a few tried and true methods. My personal favorite is to walk the shorelines with swim baits, jigs and diving plugs working the first and second trough near shore. An alternative method would be to rig a live mullet on a fish finder rig and work the same surf fishing zones to find feeding flounder.

Who doesn’t dream of hooking into giant snook along Florida’s Space Coast beaches? If you share this passion then look for May to begin the height of snook fishing from the beach. Similar to flounder, there are multiple methods that can deliver these trophy catches. Live mullet, croakers and pinfish rigged on a fish finder rig, free-lined, or on a jig head should have great results. Alternatively, walking the shore with suspending and diving rapalas, swim baits and bucktails are a sure fire method to cover ground and find ambushing snook.
