black drum surf fishing

Surf fishing season is officially here! Followed by rain, wind and cooler air and water temperatures.

Anglers in the northern part of Brevard County can have much success catching plenty of catfish, ladyfish, whiting and puppy black drum and redfish in the first and second troughs. Some Pompano are being caught around the Cape, but not in real significant numbers yet. As this front comes in with another following on Wednesday/Thursday I can predict that we should get our first wave of migratory Pompano to start making their way down the coast.

As to the southern end of the County, it looks like things may be a little better! There’s reports of Pompano limits coming in from Sebastain Inlet jetty and around the area’s beaches! Lucky anglers who found clean water and fished early morning or caught the hours before falling tide did best! Whiting are around, although, it’s been hit or miss. Croakers, jacks, ladyfish and catfish will be your main catches as well as the small black drum. If you’re patient enough to weed through the garbage fish, you can be rewarded with some swimming gold! Most local fish will be heading out of the inlets and ports once water temperatures drop.

Remember, two days before and after the front are usually best! Or, right before the front hits. Morning and evening hours have been best! Match that with a falling tide and clean water and you’ll be going home with a cooler full! All my fish caught this week have been on Fishbites, blanched fleas and peeled shrimp.
