black drum on the flats

Flats fishing in the north Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon has been pretty good this week. The topwater bite seems to be the best thing going first thing in the morning. Skitterwalk plugs made by Rapala are some of the better products we’ve been casting. The bluegill color and redfish color patterns on those plugs are catching trout to 25 inches. Working these lures around mullet pods until about 8:30am has been a solid pattern.

After the topwater bite stops, we switch over to soft plastic Saltwater Assassin paddle tails. The 4 inch sea shad in the avocado/red flake or the Mama’s 14 K have been working very well when rigged on a weedless weighted worm hook. Live shrimp are working for black drum up to 20 pounds along channel edges and bridge pilings through the mid-day period.
