mosquito lagoon flounder

After slamming twice on a favorite culvert pipe, Tony catches a bonus fish. This nearly five pound flounder whacked a small gold spoon!

We had two noticeable patterns this past week that produced good fishing results in the Mosquito Lagoon. Wind-swept points and flowing water were attracting gamefish taking advantage of small baitfish as they were swept through culvert pipes or across shallow sand bars reaching from shore and tapering towards deeper water.

These patterns should hold until the high water levels brought on by the rains and tidal surge of hurricane Dorian equalizes within the lagoon main water and back-waters.

Some points only held a fish or two while other points held many. It’s not always obvious which points will be hot spots or which side of any given point might hold a mother lode of predators. Cover these points well even if it means positioning your boat in the slop and chop! Targeting culverts with flowing water is a no-brainer for those who fish this area. The best spots tend to be hidden culverts and narrow creek mouths overgrown by mangroves or other bushes.

While we caught lots of snook as well as trout and redfish on Zman Diezel Minnows rigged on Snakelockz Jigheads the best performer was a small gold weedless spoon. This simple and humble lure caught redfish, trout, snook and a large flounder to boot!
