redfish

I was able to get some windy fishing in this weekend. I tried to hide from the wind as much as possible- concentrating my efforts on the south and eastern shores of the Indian River from Haulover to Black Point.

It was tough fishing for sure, got just a few bites, but that did include a couple keepers. I was using dead and live shrimp, mullet, and pinfish that were cast-netted as the day progressed.

Most of the fishing was done on the flats- near deeper channels and around structure close to the banks. I was able to get a nice mid-slot red around some trees and old dock piers. He ate a shrimp. I didn’t even feel it pick up the shrimp. I saw the line move and set the hook, luckily, it was a good hook-set. It put up a nice fight and made a few runs. The medium-light rod and Stradic 3000 were more than a match for it though. After hooking that fish, I fished the area thoroughly for about an hour before moving to the next spot; without any additional catches.

The next catch was similar. A live shrimp placed close to the base of a felled tree along the eastern edge. I looked down to grab something and I’ll be dammed if my line doesn’t go buzzing past me… I gotta feech! I reel as fast as I can to catch up to it and set the hook. Well, the hook was already kinda set, to be honest. I just reeled. The fight was similar to the first, as well, putting up a nice fight for a few minutes. This one was also slot, slightly over 20.”

nice redfish

Two keeper fish in one day, I’ll take it.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it …
