surf report

The cool weather we had the first few days of December has provided significant improvement to the bottom fishing activity in the surf. I ventured out in Southern Brevard county on on December 3rd to find emerald green, clean, clear water. A stiff onshore wind made conditions a little rough but it was quite fishable. I spent 2 hours in the morning from sunup until 9:00, caught a few fish, and had to return home for a bit. I really liked the way the water looked an decided to return about 1:30 and fish for a few more hours.

The bite was better in the afternoon. I landed a variety of fish with several whiting, a sheepshead, a couple pompano ( and lost another at my feet ), a couple bluefish and numerous sailcats, palometra, and small drum. The bluefish were somewhat bothersome biting off several of the droppers on my pompano rigs throughout the day as well as providing me with several 1/2 whiting!

The whiting on the day were of really good size and quality for the most part and the blues were fairly large. I highlight of the day was hooking about a 6′ shark who spooled about 40 yards of my 15# mono and took to the air as I was trying to tighten the drag when the line broke at the rig.

All in all, it was a fun busy day. As the water cools a bit more I expect the pompano be showing up in much stronger numbers.
