snook

March winds are definitely living up to their reputation this week! Windy, cool days have definitely been making the bite a little tough, but with some determination and a little patience there is great reward!

With the inconsistent weather, the best pattern I seem to have found is fishing deeper areas with scented soft plastics. The higher the sun, the better, so no need to wake up early. Water temperatures have been into the 50s and low 60s which is very cool for our region.

Mangrove trees are highways for fish which are home to many organisms such as crabs, shrimp, and many other species of baitfish. Deeper mangrove pockets are always a great “go to.” Especially when dealing with extreme temps, casting gulp shrimp, or even your favorite soft plastic lathered in scents such as bio edge are a great way to entice a bite! Also, slowing down your presentation definitely can be key and this week it really made a difference.

Luckily, as expected, snook are starting to make an appearance but the main bite has still been redfish, trout, and black drum. Look for deeper mangrove edges. After finding a bite with plastics it never hurts to switch to a live or dead shrimp and really pick the area apart to create a faster bite.

Spring is almost here and warmer temps should arrive soon and create more opportunities!
